CHOICES

Julia Barretto

This December, we are celebrating our human ability to Regret as part of our “Choices” Issue. A two-part series that hopefully makes us rethink the quality of our choices. Regret, why regret? The world we live in has put too much weight and negativity towards regret that nobody dares to claim it.

We are taught to be grateful and satisfied with whatever decision we make in life, even amid failure and disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, please, by all means, say your gratitude. There is no shame in surviving. But my point is that this mindset has deeply embedded in our lives — it almost never occurred to anyone to question it.

WHAT IF

“What” and “If” are two words as non-threatening as words can be. But put them together side-by-side, and they have the power to haunt you for the rest of your life: What if? What if? What if?

– Lise Friedman

Regret, like all other emotions, is imperative. If love makes you hopeful, trust gives you courage, and confidence gives you strength, regret makes you cautious. It makes you realize your options. Now regret doesn’t only come in things you have done. But rather, more often than not, lies beneath the choices you wish you could have done — the path you desire to have taken but did not.

“I wanna inspire people to learn how to keep their chin up and to keep going. And to have grace in situations where you know some might feel hopeless or lost.”

Life is a crazy ride of what was, what is, and what will be. This world and this society have affluent people with perfection and expectations. The best that you could hope for is that the choices you make are as good as you expect them to be.

“I feel like I’m not very open to the public with who I am, so every time something gets out about me, they easily believe it because I don’t give them the basis of the kind of person that I am.”

“I feel like some of the things that happen in your life, maybe the worst or the best thing — I feel like it all leads you to where you are meant to be, and it is meant to happen to shape you to be the person you are bound to become.”

This merry month of December, we chose to put Julia Barretto at the forefront of our cover. A woman of sheer courage and strength. With a sense of self-worth and decisiveness, Julia conquered this year with her head held high. She is infrangible. Indeed, a woman of this generation.

Her beauty in bucolic vision sets the scene. Shot through the lens of fashion photography genius Shaira Luna in almost romantic hues that bring the mood. This issue aims to put light on the paradox of regret in things that could have been. What if?
