A Step By Step Guide To Men’s Natural Makeup

Men need makeup too.
by Ian Vill

24Men and makeup has always been a taboo. Makeup is typically seen as exclusive to women. This perception is completely inaccurate. Men’s natural makeup is an actual way of getting ready and looking strikingly handsome.

If you’re a man who doesn’t give a shizzle about society’s perceptions of masculinity, then you’ve come to the right place.

A lot of us guys don’t need to go for those super extra makeup looks. Sometimes, we want a simple and easy natural paint.

STEP 1: CLEAN YOUR FACE

Before you even get started with makeup, make sure you are already maintaining a consistent skincare routine fit for your skin type. If you’re interested in getting to know more about that, we have an article perfect for you here.

Once you’ve figured out your skincare routine, make sure to do it before applying makeup. Having your pores clean and pure is essential as dirty pores may clog when used with makeup. This may cause breakouts and other acne problems.

STEP 2: THE BASE, NOT THE FOUNDATION

You probably don’t even know what a base is. This is a makeup essential. It is what keeps the makeup on your face after a long ass time of it being there. Spread it all over your face, but spread it downwards. Remember this with all makeup products. Our pores face downwards, so if you put makeup upwards facing your forehead, it will go inside your pores and clog.

STEP 3: FOUNDATION, ACTUAL NATURAL MAKEUP

You’ve probably heard of what foundation is. Girls talk about this a lot. Foundation is what you cover your entire face with to make sure it has a consistent color. By consistent, I mean, you need to make sure that your face is beat according to your skin tone. If you can, put it on your neck as well to make sure the color is super consistent.

If you want less coverage and a more natural look, you can use BB cream instead.

STEP 4: CONCEALER, MAYBE NOT SO NATURAL?

If you have acne on your face, this is the part where you say goodbye to them. They don’t disappear, but like how your thick girlfriend likes to hide her belly flaps with black shirts, you’re concealing them so they won’t be so visible.

Concealer is usually a few shades darker than the foundation. It is blended on top of dark spots to make it look like a blur. But remember, blend DOWNWARDS!

STEP 5: THAT’S NOT CONTOUR, IT’S NATURAL MAKEUP

Seriously though, it’s contour. This is the part that enhances your features. Contouring is the method of using darker shades of makeup to make your sharp edges pop. This is usually used on the nose to make it look smaller and taller, and the cheekbones to make it look sharper. I have also seen people use it on their jaw to create a shadow and enhance it if they have a less prominent jawline.

STEP 6: EYES AND EYEBROWS

The eye area can be done before or after the contour. If you want to do anything with your eyes, though, this is the time to do that. A lot of men don’t use eye make up as they don’t see the need for it. But it is super useful for Asian men who want to make their eyes pop. You can also connect the contouring part of your nose to your eyes.

Let’s not forget about the eyebrows. We can’t have our face being smooth while we have a giant fuzz in the middle of our face. Trim this before you even start doing makeup and make sure to use eyebrow gel and comb/brush it. If you want, you’re free to use an eyebrow pencil if you’re missing an eyebrow.

STEP 7: LIPS, BRIGHT AND HEALTHY

Men wear lipstick. You can use colored lip balm if you don’t want to apply lipstick. Since it is a natural makeup style, you won’t have any deep reds or sparkling pinks. Use a color close to your natural lips with a pinkish undertone instead.

STEP 8: FINISHING THAT NATURAL MAKEUP LOOK

If you are following all the steps, the actual makeup part should be over by now. We’re just going to add either a setting powder or setting spray. These will keep your makeup in place throughout the day. Some setting powders and sprays claim to make your face matte or shiny. From my experience, though, setting spray usually makes your face glowing and bright while setting powder makes it looks matte.

There we go. Easy, breezy, dashing cover boy!
