ABOUT THE COVER

Fashion and sustainability are two different things. Fashion is changing, addictive, excessive, and fast-moving, while sustainability is all about slowness, care, thriving, and responsibility.

It’s no news that the fashion industry, until relatively recently, hasn’t been very sustainable in its practices. According to market research company YouGov.com, in 2017 alone, a third of Filipinos disposed of clothing after just one use. And guess what? Millennials (those aged between  16 and 34) have the highest proportion of fast fashion consumption, according to the survey.

There’s a stigma attached to being seen in an outfit you wore more than once, especially in show business. When celebrities are seen or photographed wearing the same outfit, again and again, they are labeled #OutfitRepeater and are questioned on their perceived lack of creativity and financial capability. This, in turn, results in their fear of being ostracized, of being unliked and unpopular.

This month, STAIL.PH attempts to break the #OutfitRepeater stigma. On our cover, STAIL icon Ylona Garcia wears one dress, serving three sickening looks, snatched and unapologetic. With her photos shot by the amazing Wilmark Jolindon and her fashion film directed by Ej Bonagua, this issue is another trailblazer, a challenge to our generation to think about what it wears. With this in mind, let’s make more mindful purchases and ask ourselves each time, “Am I going to wear this new dress to the extent that it was worth being made?”

In this issue, we hope to deliver a better understanding of an eco-conscious lifestyle without having to sacrifice style. Fashion can be a lot of things and can mean different things to people. It can be a drug-free boost that makes a terrible day feel a bit better, a collection of the beautiful little pieces of yourself, an amplifier when your voice is unheard, and a reminder during your days of desperation that even if nothing else is going as you planned, you are still armed.

Fashion is so much more than just clothing. Fashion should be about feeling good as much as looking good. Individual accountability is the new trend.

This is the Sustainable Issue: Dress On Repeat.

RED-dy Or Not

“Just do what makes you feel good, mentally and physically–take care of your body because it’s the only body you have. If something goes haywire, just let people say what they want to say, focus on yourself and get better. Self-reflect!”
