First They Were Plastic Bottles, Now They’re Sneakers: Converse’s “Renew Initiative” Champions Sustainable Fashion

by STAIL Team

Sustainable fashion refers to the act of creating  products with materials derived from eco-friendly resources.

In its efforts to find new use for post-consumer and post-industrial waste, Converse introduced the Chuck Taylor All Star “Renew Initiative” Pack.

In an Instagram post, the shoe brand revealed that the products are made of 100 percent recycled plastic bottles.

Meanwhile, the brand’s Renew Denim utilizes upcycled textiles diverted from landfills as material for the Chuck Taylor All Star or Chuck 70. And its Renew Cotton will form new yarn out of cotton canvas waste.

The amazing thing is that these recycled, upcycled, and repurposed materials do not in any way affect the look or feel of a beloved fashion brand’s iconic sneakers. According to a press release, Renew Canvas has “the same feel and look as traditional Converse canvas, except now made from 100 percent recycled polyester that came from used plastic bottles.”
